LANSING, Mich. — House Republican Leader Matt Hall and Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt recently visited the United States’ southern border with Mexico in Eagle Pass, Texas. The visit aimed to observe the ongoing efforts to combat the border crisis that has escalated during President Joe Biden's administration.

During their visit, the legislative leaders met with Texas officials and witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by illegal immigration. The operation they observed, known as Texas’ Operation Lone Star, focuses on enhancing border security, reducing illegal crossings, conducting surveillance, and combating drug trafficking. Governor Greg Abbott initiated this operation in 2021 to address the gaps in border security created by the current administration.

Hall, reflecting on his experience, expressed his concerns about the situation, stating, "In Texas, I witnessed the immigration crisis firsthand." He highlighted the consequences of undoing previous policies and allowing illegal immigrants to exploit the asylum process to remain in the country for extended periods. Hall also criticized Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's support for illegal entrants with pending asylum applications through taxpayer-funded programs.

Nesbitt echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the severity of the crisis, saying, “We’ve all heard about the Biden border crisis; it’s even more shocking to witness the chaos unfold before your own eyes.” He raised concerns about the impact of the border crisis on national security and public safety, citing instances of violent crimes committed by illegal aliens in Michigan.

Both leaders have been actively involved in addressing the implications of the border crisis on Michigan's policies. They have advocated for measures to combat illegal immigration, including banning sanctuary policies and cracking down on fentanyl distribution. Additionally, they have criticized Governor Whitmer's initiatives that provide assistance to individuals who entered the country illegally.

The visit to the southern border comes at a time when the Michigan Legislature is working to address the challenges posed by illegal immigration and the need for stronger border security measures. Hall and Nesbitt have called for action to protect American communities and ensure the enforcement of immigration laws.

As the debate on immigration policies continues, the visit by Hall and Nesbitt serves as a reminder of the complex issues surrounding the border crisis and the importance of addressing them effectively at both the state and federal levels.
